Twentysomething Bulletproof Coffee : Trial and Failure

From August 12 – 23 I gave bullet proof coffee a try. I dipped my toes in the bullet proof trendy pool, but most of the rave –reviews I’ve read seemed a little hoaky to my surprise. For example – the way they conveyed “Paleo and Bulletproof helped me get pregnant!” was WAY off base. However, I’ve tumbled over a few blogs that gave the coffee a shot and the BCAA nutritional math added up, I had already been doing intermittant fasting for two months, and I gave it a go. HOWEVER, I did NOT do it as prescribed (only using coconut oil without grass fed butter and much less of the recommended dose of oil too). The rational behind this was (I won’t lie) fear of gaining too much weight, interrupting the fasting technique, difficulty in obtaining grass fed butter cheaply, and the overwhelming richness of the coffee.

Twentysomething Bulletproof Coffee:

1 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil
1-2 cups brewed coffee (I used folgers)
Screw-cap waterbottle (for shaking)

Brew coffee and add coconut oil in “shaker” – shake vigerously for as long as you can take it (usually 3 minutes considering it’s first thing in the morning, and I haven’t had coffee yet)

Was it delicious? Yes! Did it help my intermittent fasting? No. Did curb my hunger? No – it made it worse actually. Did it improve my enegery during workouts? Nope. Did it improve my daily energy. No.

And so the bullet proof coffee myth – at least the twentysomething and paleo version of bullet proof coffee – has beeen debunked and I am VERY happy to currently drink normal black paleo-friendly coffee WITH a light paleo breakfast during a typical american eating cycle.



Chilly Mocha Protein Shake

Iced coffee, meet frozen hot chocolate. Iced coffee and frozen hot chocolate, meet protein and kale. It’s a chilly mocha double date and it’s delicious!!

Chilly Mocha Protein Shake: 2 servings @ 190 cal/ea (F 12g; C 22g; 18g)

½ avocado
1 banana
3 tbsp Hemp Protein
1 cup almond milk
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp instant coffee

twentysomethingandpaleo protein shake method:

Mix one recipe’s batch of protein shake every other day.
Day 1:
pour half into big-ass-water bottle and “leave room for cream” (jk there’s no cream in paleo – but seriously leave room in the water bottle)
bring to work and keep refrigerated if possible
an hour before work ends and you head to your home-box, go down to the ice machine and fill up all that cream-room with ice
shake like they taught you in zumba and get a baby ab work out
drink half
kick ass at your WOD
drink second half BEFORE you even have time to cry
Day 2:
rinse and repeat


Golden Almond Coffee Creamer (13 servings @ 22 cal/ea)

Golden Almond Coffee Creamer
13 servings – 2 tbps @ 22 cal/ea.

This morning I tried out just-plain-almond milk in my coffee – blech. I’ll at least have to get used to it – so for now it’s time to mix up some creamer without any chemicals or artificial flavoring! Wahoo! I used:

3 cups almond milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp agave nectar or honey

Pour into creamer vessel and shake or mix.

Mmmm… that’s better. My coworker who said almond milk in coffee by itself was enough, probably hasn’t been tainting her coffee with Nestle and International Delight for years… good for her. Bad for me.
